Basement Remodeling Preparation
Basement remodels require you to plan
ahead and prepare for your contractors
to be moving things in and out of your
lower level. The stairwell, entrance way
and storage area are the three main
areas to focus on. Contractors need to
be able to easily get from their truck
and into your basement as they are
carrying heavy loads of materials and
equipment.
For those of you that have open
staircases, your preparation is minimal.
Open staircases make it easy for
contractors to carry large items into
your basement. However, if you have
walls leading down into your basement,
then I would recommend removing any
handrails that may get in the way. It
would definitely be the helpful thing to
do considering the fact that if you
leave it there, the contractors will end
up contending with it the entire
duration of the remodel. If it isn’t
done by the homeowner, the contractors
may ask to remove it themselves. Why not
lend a helping hand?
In addition to stairways, basements are
notorious for being the home of storage
needs. Even if part of your basement is
being used for a bedroom or home gym,
the chances that you still have boxes of
old junk, clothes, and other seasonal
items is usually high considering that
the basement is such a great place to
get things out of view. It all depends
on what type of remodel you having done
and what areas of the basement will be
worked on, but it is generally a good
idea to move all the storage out of the
basement and out of the contractors'
path. Think of it this way, once the
remodel is done, you won’t have the room
to store all the same items anyways. You
may not have anywhere to move the
storage, but it’s still worth it to try
and think ahead.
Preparing For Basement Remodeling
Contractors
Lastly, take the time to consider how
the contractors will be traveling into
and out of your basement and to their
trucks. Do you have fences that are in
the way, tables or chairs blocking the
walking path, rugs that are easy to trip
on, or doors that are hard to get
through? Basement remodels will require
contractors to run up and down the
stairs many times in a given work day so
having a clear pathway is crucial and
will benefit your remodel as well.
The basic idea is to remove any and
everything that might get in the way of
your contractors as they remodel your
basement. You might also want to remove
anything valuable just to be on the safe
side. As you are handling all of these
preparations, you may think of other
small things to help out and if you
aren't sure if you should do it, ask
your basement contractor. After all,
it’s the basement contractor that will
know what he may or may not need, and he
can also tell you anything else that you
can do to expedite your basement
remodel.
